Big Win for Organized Labor in Ohio on Tuesday

On Tuesday, November 8th, 2011, the voters of Ohio sent a resounding message to not only the residents of Ohio but to the nation that they support the right to engage in collective bargaining. “Voters repealed a law backed by Republican Gov. John Kasich limiting public employees’ collective bargaining rights, according to The Associated Press.  Issue 2 failed by a vote of 39 percent to 61 percent, according to The Associated Press, with 99 percent of precincts reporting. Efforts to scale back the power of labor ignited controversy in states across country this year, prompting protests from Wisconsin to New York.”[i] The Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, called the results “a victory for middle-class families across the state of Ohio.”[ii] “Voters in Ohio know that targeting public employees for political reasons will do nothing to create jobs or boost Ohio’s economy,”[iii] Shultz said in a statement.”

The lesson to be learned from Ohio is that “extremism has no place in American politics. Even though the Republicans and their henchmen and women (the Tea Party, Koch brothers, Freedom Express, and American Enterprise, to name just four of their cohorts), think America wants to bend the arm of history far Right and unravel all the rights and protections Americans have claimed as theirs over the last hundred years, they are dead wrong.”[iv] As was aptly stated by President Johnson when discussing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.”[v]
